The MCLA Trailblazers got back in the win column one day after dropping a game at Clark. Rick Massey pitched seven plus innings and Cody Weaver pitched a two inning save to close it out as MCLA defeated Norwich 4-1.
The game was crisp early as it was tied 0-0 after three and a half innings. MCLA scored in the bottom of the fourth when Chase Preite reached on an error leading off the inning. Preite stole second, advanced to third on a Joe Duncan groundout and came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Rory Slattery.
MCLA tacked two more on in the fifth off Cadets starter Brad Hudson. Chris Koch singled with one out and Derek Lescarbeau followed with a walk. Preite came up later with two and the bases loaded and dropped a single into right-center scoring two runs to give MCLA a 3-0 lead after five innings.
Norwich would threaten in the seventh putting runners on second and third with two out; but J.J. Losco would fly to right to end the threat.
Koch would get his second hit leading off the bottom of the seventh as MCLA would add a run to go up 4-0 after seven full.
Norwich would get to Massey in the eighth as he tired and got a little wild. Massey hit the leadoff batter, Corey Shearer and sent him to second on a wild pitch. Brandon Place and Devin Cilley had back to back singles to make it 4-1 and then pinch-hitter Nick Gendron walked loading the bases with nobody out. Cody Weaver would relieve Massey and put out the fire retiring the next three batters, two via the strikeout.
Weaver would strikeout two more in the ninth, picking up his first save of the year. Massey scattered seven hits to record his first victory of the season. Hudson took the loss for Norwich, pitching six innings and allowing four hits and three earned runs, he also walked three.
Place had three hits for the Cadets as they dropped to 0-8.
MCLA moves to 6-5 and takes on Lasell College Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 12:00PM.
