Baseball clipped by Williams 4-2 as ninth inning rally falls short

Williamstown, MA- The Williams College baseball team got a two run single from Doug Schaffer in the bottom of the eighth inning and then held off a two out rally as the Ephs earned a 4-2 victory over MCLA this afternoon at Bobby Coombs field.  The Ephs improve to 6-14 on the season.

MCLA falls below .500 at 9-10-1 overall.

The Trailblazers led early as they scored a run in the top of the first.  Brett LaBonte lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bill Pulasky, who had earlier doubled for an early 1-0 lead.  Trailblazer starter Isaac Marx, making just his second appearance of the season, tossed three scoreless frames to maintain the early lead.

The Ephs would eventually tie the game at 1-1 on Jack Roberts' RBI single in the fifth.  Adam Dulsky would knock home Roberts with a single of his own to give Williams a 2-1 advantage.

MCLA would knot things up again in the sixth when Brandon Condon worked a bases loaded walk scoring Brett LaBonte to make it 2-2.  The Trailblazers would leave the bases loaded however.

The score would remain tied into the bottom of the eighth inning when Schaffer once again came through in the clutch.  His two run single made it 4-2 in favor of Williams heading to the ninth.

MCLA would not go quietly in the ninth however.  After two quick outs, Trailblazers Christian Seariac, Brett LaBonte, and Jake Ferrara all singled to load the bases for Joe Toledo.  Williams closer Bryan Wooley induced Toledo into a fly out to left field to seal the win for the Ephs.

Seariac went 3-4 for the Trailblazers to lead a nine hit attack.  LaBonte added a pair of hits for MCLA.  The Trailblazers used seven pitchers in the contest as Kody Crosier was tagged with the loss.

For Williams, they were led offensively by Schaffer who ended the day 3-4 with a pair RBI's.  Dulsky added two hits for the Ephs.  Phillip Barnett earned the win out of the Eph bullpen and Wooley collected his second save of the season.

MCLA is back in action on Saturday with an important MASCAC matchup in Worcester against the Lancers.
