WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior midfielder Justin Laliberte (Easthampton) scored 2:06 into overtime to lift Westfield State University to a 1-0 men's soccer victory over Western Mass. rival MCLA on Saturday, Oct. 22.
The key conference victory snapped the Owls' four-game losing skid. Westfield is 9-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the MASCAC. The Owls' final regular season game is Saturday, Oct. 29, when they host Framingham State at 11:00 a.m. MCLA dropped to 5-9-1 and 1-4-1.
Laliberte's game-winning goal was set up following a cross by Josh Severns that moved the MCLA goalie out of the box. Two MCLA defenders stopped the ball from crossing the goal line several times as Laliberte and teammate Tim Parsons kept hammering the ball. Laliberte finally sent the ball across the goal line and the Westfield players erupted.
Westfield outshot MCLA, 11-5, and the Owls also led in corner kicks, 8-2.
MCLA will have senior day on Tuesday when they host Sage College.
