MCLA Athletics Week in Review (January 18th-25th)
Missed anything in Athletics this past week? Take a look at the weekly recaps of the Men's and Women's Basketball teams, including their sweep of Westfield State College.
The MCLA women's basketball team wrapped up their week going 2-1 in MASCAC play.
On Saturday the women traveled to Fitchburg where it took a last minute jumper from the corner from Senior Jade Prickett (Westhampton, MA/Hampshire Regional) to separate the two teams from a 61-61 tie that eventually lead to the win. Fitchburg had one possession to tie or take the lead, but their last shot fell well short on a deep three. Prickett finished with a game high 17 points.
On Thursday, the team traveled to Framingham State where they fell 63-44. The Trailblazers shot 14% from the field in the second half and 25% for the game. Junior Molly Broda (Southampton, MA) finished with a team high 13 points and went 3 of 8 shooting from beyond the arc.
Tuesday, the women came out strong and handily defeated rival Westfield 60-35. The Trailblazers defense held the Owls to 16% shooting on the night. Freshman Lucy Tremblay (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) scored a game high 14 points, while Senior Laura Silverman (Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa) scored 8 points and lead all rebounders with 10.
At week's end, the women's team found themselves at 12-4 overall, 2-3 in the MASCAC and currently find themselves in fourth place in the league.
The men's Basketball team finished their week 1-2 in MASCAC play with their only win coming against Westfield State at home last Tuesday. In that effort, the Trailblazers finished the game on a 10-0 run to finish off a 75-69 win.
The Trailblazers traveled to Fitchburg State last Saturday where they lost a heartbreaker in overtime 87-83. Behind Sophomore Chris Harris (Dorchester, MA/John D. O'Bryant), Junior Benny Cuprill (Albany, N.Y./Tamarac) and Junior Jon Greenberg (Antwerp, Belgium/Dennis-Yarmouth), the Trailblazers were able to climb back from a seven point deficit in the final 2:30 to send the game into overtime, but would fall behind early in the extra period. Five Trailblazers scored in double-digits, including Harris and Greenberg each collecting a double-double
Thursday the men's team traveled to Framingham State where they fell 91-82. Harris had a game high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds. Junior Brendan Kordana (Adams, Mass.) also added 18 points of his own in the loss.
The men's team is now 7-10, 1-4 in MASCAC play and currently sits in sixth place in the standings.
