The MCLA Trailblazers and Sage Gators softball team hooked up for an exciting non-conference doubleheader today that took extra innings in game one; and another one run game in a shortened game two. The Trailblazers and Gators split when the dust settled and Sage had picked up their first win of the year (1-23), while MCLA, playing for the third time in four days moved to 10-14.
MCLA won game one in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the ninth when Jackyn Candelet (Pittsfield, MA) plated two on a single to right. The Trailblazers finally were able to take the lead after rallying to tie in both the eighth and ninth innings.
Sage jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first, the big blow coming on the first of two home runs in game one off the bat of Jennifer Ahearn (Cohoes, NY). Sage added another in the second, before MCLA was able to respond.
MCLA scored four of its own in the bottom of the second. Double by Megan Boyer (Clarksburg, MA) and Kayla Koumjian (Watervliet, NY) drove in all four runs to tie the game at 5-5.
The game would go back and forth until the Trailblazers rally in the ninth.
Hadley Ameen (North Adams, MA) evened her record at 7-7 pitching eight innings of relief. Gabriella Skillen (Milford, NY) took the loss for Sage.
In game two Sage once again struck first scoring a run in the second. The game would again be tight, but Sage was able to hold on for the first time all year by a score of 4-3.
Meghan Welcome (Cohoes, NY) was 2-3 with a double and two RBI’s for the Gators.
Boyer had two more hits for MCLA in the nightcap. Candelet and Koumjian were both 1-3 with an RBI.
Skillen pitched her second complete game of the day to earn the win. Sarah Greenwood (Northfield, MA) took the loss for MCLA and drops to 3-7 on the hill for the Trailblazers.
