Trailblazers Rally to Earn Split
MCLA Softball split a doubleheader on Monday afternoon, with a 10-3 loss in the opener versus WPI before rallying for an 8-7 win on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap.
North Adams, MA --- MCLA Softball split a doubleheader on Monday afternoon, with a 10-3 loss in the opener versus WPI before rallying for an 8-7 win on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap. The Engineers are now 14-15 on the season while the Trailblazers see their record move to 9-11.
In game one the Trailblazers committed four errors that resulted in seven unearned runs. The Trailblazers got behind in the first when two errors led to five unearned runs and the Trailblazers were down 5-0 before getting to the plate. The Trailblazers bats had been red hot coming in, but were kept quiet. Samantha Naring (Norwalk, CT) was a bright spot going 1-3 with a run scored and two RBI’s. Amanda Borsotti (Lee, MA) was 1-2 with a walk.
Sophomore Allie Hardy (West Townsend, MA) picked up her third win in as many days. The righthander yielded just three hits and one run in five innings en route to pushing her record to 6-4 on the season. Hadley Ameen (North Adams, MA) was the tough luck loser. Ameen did get hit giving up thirteen Engineer hits, but only gave up three earned runs and struck out ten, going the distance. Ameen dropped to 6-5 on the season.
Game two was a wild back-and-forth affair with WPI scoring three runs with two outs and no one on in the top of the seventh to seize a 7-6 lead only to see the hosts rally for two runs in the bottom of the frame to steal the walk-off win. Meg Boyer (Clarksburg, MA) , Kate Oullette (Norwood, MA) and Kayla Koumjian (Watervliet, NY) had the big hits before the winning run scored on a wild pitch.
Katherine Fitton (Lebanon, CT) smacked three extra bases hits, including a homer and a pair of doubles. The freshman, who was tagged with the loss in relief (1-1), scored three runs while classmate Courtney Rosales (Ipswich, MA) came off the bench to deliver two hits. Martori added to the WPI attack with a pair of RBI.
Sarah Greenwood (Northfield, MA) earned the win in game two to run her record to 3-5 on the hill. Greenwood went seven innings allowing nine hits and seven runs (two earned).
MCLA will play next at Springfield College on Wednesday starting at 3:30 PM.
