Trailblazers Come up Short Versus Lancers
MCLA dropped a pair of close games Monday to MASCAC front runner Worcester State.
MCLA dropped a pair of close games Monday to MASCAC front runner Worcester State. The losses drop MCLA to 3-5 in the MASCAC and 11-17 overall. The Lancers move to 6-0 in the league and 14-10 overall.
In game one Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, MA) out dueled Hadley Ameen (North Adams, MA) by a 2-0 score; both pitchers went the distance allowing three hits. The difference in the game was five Trailblazer errors that resulted in two unearned runs.
Worcester got a run in the second when Kate Souder (Milford, MA) reached on an error leading off the inning. Souder would later score in the inning on a fielder’s choice. Worcester would get another in the fourth on two more MCLA errors with two outs in the inning.
MCLA had a chance in the seventh when Kate Oullette (Norwood, MA) and Kayla Koumjian (Watervliet, NY) hit back to back singles with two outs bringing the winning run to the plate. However, Amanda Borsotti (Lee, MA) grounded out to end the threat.
Alex Kerr (Franklin, MA) had two hits for the Lancers. Oullette had two for MCLA. Mahoney moved to 9-5 with the win and Ameen dropped to 8-8 with the game one defeat.
Game two was also a close affair, but again it was the Lancers coming out on top 4-2.
MCLA got behind 4-0 after three innings after the Lancers plated three in the third. The big hit was a two-run single by Erica Cordio (Leominster, MA).
MCLA again would threaten late. The Trailblazers got a run back in the fourth, but squandered a chance for more. MCLA had runners second and third with nobody out. Jacklyn Candelet (Pittsfield, MA) scored on a Megan Boyer (Clarksburg, MA) ground out. The inning ended with Sarah Greenwood (Northfield, MA) being thrown out at the plate trying to score on a groundout by Oullette.
MCLA got another back in the sixth on Amber Coburn’s (Colrain, MA) first homer of the year and in the seventh had the winning run at the plate with one out, but could not score as Meg Vallieres (North Adams, MA) struck out with Borsotti on second and Koumjian on third.
Lauren Besozzi (Milford, MA) had two hits for the Lancers in the nightcap and Marcy Rumrill (Orange, MA) got the win.
Ameen took the loss for MCLA to fall to 8-9. Candelet had two hits. Kendra Hobbs (Haverill, MA) and Greenwood were both 1-3.
Worcester State will play Rhode Island College on Wednesday and MCLA will take on Skidmore Thursday at home at 3:30 PM.
