MCLA Picks up First Victory
The MCLA softball team opened the 2010 season in Florida today.
The Trailblazers picked up their first victory of the season in an extra inning affair with Westminster by the score of 2-1.
Westminster jumped out 1-0 in the first, but Trailblazers pitcher Hadley Ameen (North Adams, MA/Drury) was in control the rest of the afternoon. Ameen went the distance allowing only the one run, while striking out three. Ameen would also help out her cause banging out three hits of her own.
MCLA struck back offensively in the third when freshman right fielder Kendra Hobbs (Haverill, MA/Whittier Tech) laid down a perfect bunt, stole second, and scored when Jaclyn Candelet (Pittsfield, MA/Taconic) cranked out a double, allowing Hobbs to score. Candelet was 2-4 with an RBI on the afternoon.
The score would remain tied through seven innings and through the start of extra innings. The Trailblazers held Westminster scoreless in the top of the 8th and went to work quickly in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore center fielder Amber Coburn (Colrain, MA/Franklin Tech) had the game winning hit knocking in Candelet who had reached earlier in the inning with her second hit of the afternoon.
Ameen picked up her first victory of the season and Hobbs added two hits on the day.
In game two the Trailblazer’s fell to Ashford College (IA) 14-4.
MCLA started off strong offensively in the top of the first inning, scoring three times. Candelet singled, Coburn was hit by a pitch, and advanced on a passed ball and stolen base. Katie Ouellette (Norwood, MA/Norwood) and Hobbs both had RBI singles in the innings. Ouellette later scored in the inning.
Ashford responded by scoring six runs in the bottom of the first, en route to victory.
Freshman Sarah Greenwood (Northfield, MA/Pioneer Valley) pitched the first 2 2/3 innings, and took the loss.
