MCLA's Wehner's earns first team honors, while Tremblay is tabbed Rookie of the Year
The MCLA Women's basketball team was well represented on the All Conference awards as sophomore Jen Wehner earned first team honors, while freshman Lucy Tremblay was named the Rookie of the Year. The awards are given out after a vote of the league's coaches.
North Adams, MA- MCLA sophomore forward Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, NY) has been named first team All MASCAC, while her teammate, freshman guard Lucy Tremblay (East Greenbush, NY) was tabbed as the MASCAC Rookie of the Year as announced by the league on Wednesday. The awards are chosen following a league wide vote of the conference coaches.
This is the second appearance for Wehner on the All Conference team as she recieved second team honors a year ago. This season, she currently leads the team in scoring, rebounding, FG%, and Blocks. Her 14 points per game average is good enough for third in the MASCAC, while she leads the conference in rebounding (10.1), Field Goal percentage (58.1%), and blocks (2.96). She has tallied eleven double doubles this season, while setting a career high in points with 27 against Williams. She also set single game career highs this season in rebounds (19) and Blocks (7).
Head Coach Holly McGovern said about Wehner, "We challenged Jen this year to become more physical offensively and defensively and she has responded positively to that challenge. She was outstanding on the defensive side and by having her presence in the middle, we were able to defend the perimeter more aggressively. During the latter part of the season, she began to understand how to alleviate pressure with her passing ability, which improved our perimeter game. Jen is the type of player that when you ask her to develop a new skill, she will put the time in after practice that day to learn that skill, then utilize it in practice the next day."
Wehner was selected as the conference player of the week once during the season, while being named to the honor roll on multiple occasions. She was also selected to the first team All MASCAC as a member of the Women's Soccer Program this past fall.
If Wehner was not leading the team in scoring, there was a good chance Tremblay did. The slashing freshman posted a 12.5 points per game average during her rookie campaign, good for fifth in the MASCAC. She set a career high in the home finale against Fitchburg State, notching 24 points in the victory. Tremblay scored in double figures eighteen times this past season. She also led MCLA in steals per game (1.88).
McGovern commented about Tremblay's season by saying "Lucy has been our most consistent player offensively throughout the year. She has been a pleasure to coach because of her work ethic and willingness to adapt her game to better serve our team. I am looking forward to watching Lucy continue to develop her abilities as she progresses through her career."
Tremblay is the first player in program history to garner the rookie of the year award.
The Trailblazers set a program record for victories this season as they currently stand at 16-9, and are coming off a MASCAC quarterfinal victory over Framingham on Tuesday. MCLA is heading into a MASCAC semifinal matchup at top seeded Bridgewater State Friday at 6pm.
