MCLA set to face top ranked Amherst in opening NCAA tournament game Friday
The MCLA Women's Basketball team will be traveling to Amherst on Friday for a first round NCAA matchup with the top ranked Lord Jeffs. MCLA is currently while is currently 18-9, while Amherst enters the tournament undefeated at 27-0.
North Adams, MA- The MCLA Women's Basketball, the 2010 MASCAC Tournament Champions, will be traveling to Amherst on Friday at 6pm to play top seeded Amherst College in the first round of the NCAA tournament. MCLA will enter their first NCAA tournament with a record of 18-9.
MCLA, under fifth year head coach Holly McGovern, captured their first ever tournament title on Saturday defeating Worcester State 68-65 to earn the MASCAC automatic bid to the tournament.
MCLA is led by sophomore Jen Wehner who leads the team in scoring, rebounding, blocks, and field goal percentage. Wehner was named the MASCAC player of the week following her performance in the conference playoffs. She was also named the tournaments most outstanding player.
Joining Wehner is freshman Lucy Tremblay. Tremblay was tabbed as the 2010 MASCAC rookie of the year after averaging 12 points per game. The freshman also leads MCLA in steals.
The Amherst Lord Jeffs enter the 2010 tournament as the number one ranked team in the country in the latest D3 Hoops national poll. Amherst is currently 27-0 and was a 2009 National final four participant. They currently have nine players who average over five points per game.
The other game in the Amherst regional will see at large selection the University of Southern Maine face Liberty League champion RPI. The two winners will face off on Saturday at 5pm to advance to the sweet 16 at a site to be determined.
