MCLA Bounces Back Against UMPI
MCLA pounded out 16 hits and Brenden Wyand (Pittsfield, MA) picked up his second victory of the year to give MCLA the 11-2 victory over the University of Maine at Presque-Isle.
North Adams, MA - MCLA pounded out 16 hits and Brenden Wyand (Pittsfield, MA) picked up his second victory of the year to give MCLA the 11-2 victory over the University of Maine at Presque-Isle. MCLA scored three runs in the first, third and fifth innings and added two more in the fourth as they were in complete control from start to finish. Wyand pitched six strong innings and only ran into trouble in the third and that damage was done without a hit. MCLA (15-8, 6-2) led 3-0 in the third when Wyand walked two in the inning, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch, but UMPI could only manage a run. Wyand got DJ Charette (Millinocket, ME) to ground out to short to end the threat and MCLA jumped ahead 6-1 in the bottom the frame.
Six Trailblazers had multi-hit games led by Tim Burns (Pittsfield, MA) and Rick Massey (Pittsfield, MA) with three hits each, the tandem also combined for five runs scored. Joe Parillo (West Springfield, MA) had three RBI's to lead MCLA including a long double in the fifth that played Cory Burtman (Norwood, MA). MCLA in fact had three doubles in the three-run fifth (Burtman and Massey had the others), after eight straight singles through the first four innings.
Wyand moved to 2-0 on the season and allowed three hits and a run while striking out four; Max Mayer (Oxford, ME) took the loss for UMPI (11-18). Duncan McDonald (Hartford, VT) pitched three innings to pick up his first save of the year. Freshman Evan Frank (Schenectady, NY) got the start at catcher and picked up two hits. UMPI will play Vermont Tech tomorrow and MCLA will play a pivotal conference double-header at Worcester State tomorrow at 12:00pm.
