MCLA Loses 15-8 Despite Big Day by Preite
Chase Preite was a single shy of the cycle in today's loss to Skidmore.
MCLA lost its fifth straight game today to Skidmore College by a score of 15-8. MCLA actually outhit Skidmore 14-13, but eight walks and seven errors, led to fifteen Skidmore runs, nine of which were unearned.
Skidmore scored two in the first when with two on and two out Erik Watkins (Sudbury, MA) reached on an error by third baseman Cody Weaver. Weaver fielded the ball cleanly, but his throw went down the right-field line allowing two runners to score.
Weaver atoned for his error in the bottom of the second leading the inning off with a double. He would score one batter later on an infield single by Dale Clark. Clark would come around on a single by left-fielder Mike Mancivalano. Mancivalano had three hits on the day.
Skidmore would score two more unearned runs in the fourth as MCLA committed two errors in the inning. Skidmore took a 4-2 lead despite having only one hit in the game at that point.
Skidmore would push its lead to 7-2 in the fourth. Zack Rudman (Pittsford, NY) had the big hit in the inning, a two-run double that scored Geoff Green (Underhill, VT) and Alex Barber (Cambridge, MA).
The lone bright spot for MCLA was the day Chase Preite had at the dish. Preite homered in the fifth to make it 7-3. Preite also tripled and hit a ground-ruled double on the day, coming a single short of hitting for the cycle.
MCLA would get it to 7-4 in the sixth as Mancivalano doubled home Peter Dassatti. Mancivalano would advance to third on an bad-hop infield single by Joe Duncan. Duncan would steal second, but Mancivalano would break late for home and was thrown out trying to advance ending the inning.
Every time MCLA would get back in Skidmore would put more room between them and in the seventh they added two more.
Watkins would double and later score on a double-play. Skidmore would add another unearned run in the inning.
The score would be 11-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth and MCLA would chip away. Duncan tripled home Mancivalano and scored himself on a Preite groundout. Weaver would single home Rory Slattery later to make it 11-8.
Skidmore would put the game away in the ninth with four unearned runs off reliever Derek Lescarbeau.
Jeff Spindel (New Canaan, CT) picked up his first win of the year for the Thoroughbreds and Jordan Keysor (Cadyville, NY) his first save of the season. Jared Gersch fell to 1-3 on the season. Gersch pitched four innings allowing seven runs (four earned), on four hits and six walks. He struck out five.
Watkins had four hits for Skidmore and Rudman added three hits and three RBI's.
Weaver added three hits for the Trailblazers and Clark pitched a scoreless inning of relief, the only Trailblazer pitcher not to allow a run on the day.
MCLA will play at Salem State Saturday at 1:00pm
