Baseball shutout in non league matchup with Lyndon State 5-0
Andrew Casteel had two hits on the afternoon in MCLA's loss to Lyndon State today
North Adams, MA- Four Lyndon State pitchers combined on a six hit shutout as the Hornets breezed past the MCLA Trailblazers 5-0 this afternoon in non league action. The Hornets improve to 20-16 on the season while MCLA drops their fourth straight in falling to 12-17.
Lyndon's Devon Rollins went 3-5 at the plate and scored three times to pace the offense. Ryan Cordeiro and Nathan Stewart each added two hits as the Hornets pounded out 11 hits on the afternoon.
Starting pitcher Davis Guyer (2-1) earned the win tossing the first five innings and allowing just three hits while striking out a pair of Trailblazers. The trio of Jake Jourdain, Ben Rollins, and Zak Johnson allowed just four hits over the final four innings to complete the shutout.
The Hornets didn't waste any time in getting to MCLA starter Brendan Kelly. They would scratch a run across in the first inning as Rollins and Cordeiro singled, and when Andre Eason reached on a fielders choice, the bases were loaded without an out. Johnson drove home the first run on a sacrifice fly and Kelly avoided further damage by getting a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.
Lyndon would keep the pressure up however in the second inning. With two outs, Rollins singled home Sam Ognenoff, who had walked and advanced on a wild pitch, making it 2-0. Rollins stole second and came around on Cordeiro's RBI single increasing the lead to 3-0. Cordeiro would advance to third on a failed pickoff attempt and then scamper home on a wild pitch for a 4-0 Lyndon advantage that chased Kelly from the game.
The MCLA bullpen was outstanding as they allowed just one run over the final 7.1 innings. Schuyler Robinson allowed a run in the fifth inning on Eason Jr. RBI hit, but that was all the Trailblazers would allow.
The Hornet pitching staff would be up to the task and keep zeroes on the board. MCLA had some chances but a few baserunning miscues took them out of potential scoring chances and Lyndon was able to keep the lead.
In the ninth, MCLA started the frame with consecutive singles from Myles Candelet and Brett LaBonte, however a flyout and strikeout quieted the rally. After an error loaded the bases with two outs, Darien Luckett lined out on a diving catch in right field to end the game preserving the shutout for the Hornets.
Candelet and Andrew Casteel had two hits to pace the MCLA offense which mustered just six hits all afternoon.
The Hornets are back in action tomorrow when they take on Maine Farmington. MCLA is off until Tuesday when they are scheduled to take on Williams College at 7pm at Joe Wolfe Field.
