Baseball Falls 7-2 at Bridgewater
MCLA dropped a MASCAC matchup with Bridgewater State this afternoon.
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The MCLA Baseball team opened its weekend home-and-home MASCAC series with the conference-leading Bridgewater State Bears this afternoon. Three Bridgewater pitchers held the Trailblazers to two runs on four hits, while the Bears were able to piece together three multi-run innings to pick up the conference win, 7-2.
THE BASICS:
- Date: Thursday, April 16, 2026
- Score: MCLA 2, BSU 7
- Records: MCLA Trailblazers 8-17 (MASCAC 2-11) | Bridgewater State University Bears 18-5 (MASCAC 12-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MCLA scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning. Gavin Pettit (Southington, CT) drove the first pitch of the inning to left field for a double. Pettit advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored two batters later when Joe Sardo (Great Neck, NY) ground into a fielder's choice to the shortstop.
- The Bears would respond with a pair of crooked-number innings in the third and fourth frames. A throwing error on a steal attempt and an RBI ground out would allow the home team to score two runs, on just a single hit in the third. The fourth inning run saw Bridgewater lay down three bunts in the first four batters of the inning, scoring runs on the third bunt, an RBI ground out, and a fielding error.
- The Trailblazers would capitalize on a pair of errors in the top of the fifth when Benjamin Jacob (Pittsfield, MA) led off with a ground ball to the shortstop, who couldn't hang on as the speedy centerfielder made his way down the line. Following an unproductive out, Jacob was again the beneficiary of a Bridgewater error, this time it was an errant throw from the catcher as Jacob attempted to steal second and then took third when the throw skipped into the outfield. Clayton Dutfield (Delmar, NY) allowed Jacob to complete the circuit when he lofted a high fly ball into left-center field, and Jacob scampered home.
- The Bears added two more runs on RBI doubles by Cam Beltramini and Benjamin Sepeck in the bottom of the eighth inning. A third run was thwarted on Sepeck's double when the Trailblazers' relay of center fielder Jacob to second baseman Jake Jasminski (Milford, CT) to catcher Collin Gevry (Newtown, CT) nailed pinch runner Joshua Selander by a good margin at the plate.
- Bridgewater's Jaden Arruda allowed two runs on only one hit over five innings to pick up the win, improving his record to 2-0. MCLA's Cam Harrington (Pittsfield, MA) absorbed the loss for the road team, evening his record at 2-2.
