HOW IT HAPPENED (courtesy of Worcester State Athletics)
In a single-game match to kick off the final series of the regular season, each team found itself in the midst of a pitching duel. Junior Gavin Price (Worcester, MA) would force MCLA through five scoreless innings, but matching the pace was MCLA, who kept the Lancers off the scoreboard through three. Price would record his 100th career strikeout in the game after forcing some groundouts early in the action.
The bottom of the fourth would find the first score of the game as junior Alan Carpenter (Richmond, RI) would cross junior Kevin Doyle (Bridgewater, MA). The Lancers would continue to work the bags as Thurber would steal second and advance to third as Worcester would load the bases and look to drive in additional runs, but a two-out pop-up would end their threat.
The bottom of the fifth, though, would find Thurber hard at work forcing across additional runs as he knocked a hit to the shortstop with an off-placed throw, allowing him to claim first and advance to second while also allowing two runs home in Doyle and junior Derek De La Cruz (Providence, RI).
The top of the sixth found MCLA making some lucky contact and playing the pitches to load the bases, where a dinger over short to send across two runs to cut the lead to a single run for Worcester.
The bottom of the seventh found Worcester pushing their lead back to two as Bates would single past the shortstop to send home Carpenter for run number four. A junior Ryan Jewett (Natick, MA) dinger up the middle would find sophomore Riggs Catlin (Dedham, MA) powering home for the Worcester 5-2 lead.
The top of the eighth found the Trailblazers grabbing one back off new pitcher junior Teddy Cove (Worcester, MA). Worcester would lock it down on defense to force the bottom of the eighth, where they promptly loaded the bases. A walk on Catlin would send junior Tyler Normandie (Lowell, MA) strolling across home for the 6-3 lead. Bates would then claim four balls for Thurber to cross for run number seven for Worcester.
Turner would come to the mound to close out the ninth and seal the win for the Lancers as they claimed the 7-3 victory over the Trailblazers.
