Trailblazers Look To Better
Days
North Adams - The MCLA Men's Basketball team had a season that was void of wins, in fact the Trailblazers came out ahead only one time during the 2008-09 season. "I knew it would be tough for us to win games, but you never envision winning just one. This team proved to be very mentally tough though, it's very difficult to endure a season like this and come out day after day and give a solid effort. For the most part we did that, even taking MASCAC champ Bridgewater State down to the wire in the final game of the season." said Coach Jamie Morrison in his 2nd year.
The year wasn't a total loss for the Trailblazers though as some young players had some very solid contributions. That would have to start with the play of sophomore forward Jon Greenberg (Antwerp, Belgium). Greenberg, who was named 2nd team All-Conference by the MASCAC coaches despite the team's poor record; averaged 14.4 points per game and 11.4 rebounds per game, tops in the MASCAC and good for 9th nationally. Greenberg shot 244 free throws and as a team the Trailblazers shot 700, which was far and away tops in the MASCAC and one of the leading teams in the country. Greenberg also shot a respectable 46% from the field on the year. Greenberg's top highlight came on November 21st when MCLA traveled to Amherst College, the 15th ranked team in the country and the defending national runner-ups. Greenberg was the best player on the floor that day scoring 24 points on 10-16 from the field and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Greenberg's main running mate was Freshman Chris Harris (Dorchester, MA). Harris who came off ACL surgery in May led MASCAC freshmen in almost all statistical categories kept by the league, including points, rebounds, assists and steals. Harris averaged 8.7 points per game, 5.5 rebounds per game and 1.3 steals per game. Harris had a season high 10 rebounds in the Trailblazers victory at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY on December 7th.
Junior Mike Perreault (Whitinsville, MA) averaged 8.9 points per game and shot 37% from 3 point range, good enough for 7th in the MASCAC conference; while backcourt partner Jeff Sprague (North Adams, MA) averaged 7.3 points per game and shot 36% from 3 point range and 70% from the free throw line.
Captain Mike Callahan (Carmel, NY) finished his senior year having a career year averaging 6.8 points per game and 2.8 rebounds per game. Callahan shot 48% from the field and 80% from the line; all career highs. Callahan averaged 10.6 points per game in the confines of The Amsler Center, shooting a robust 58% from the field at home. Callahan closed out his career in style playing 31 minutes and scoring a career high 22 points and grabbing 6 rebounds in front of his family, friends and high school coach in a 78-74 loss to NCAA tournament bound Bridgewater State.
