If the MASCAC gave away a most improved player award, then MCLA sophomore Jon Greenberg (Antwerp, Belgium) would have been the a runaway winner. Greenberg was voted 2nd team all-MASCAC; and finished tops in several statistical categories.
Jon led three Trailblazers in the MASCAC top 25 in scoring, with an average of 14.4 points per game. Junior Mike Perreault (Whitinsville, MA) played in 24 games averaging 9.3ppg and freshman Chris Harris (Dorchester, MA) led all rookies and rounded out the top 25 at 8.7ppg.
Greenberg (Dennis-Yarmouth High School) and Harris are a common theme for the Trailblazers in most categories. The young duo also show up in rebounding as Greenberg led the MASCAC in rebounding with 11.4 rebounds per game and is ranked 9th in the country nationally(Greenberg actually was #1 in the MASCAC in both offensive and defensive rebounds). Harris finished tied for 11th with 5.5rpg. Greenberg was the lone Trailblazer to be ranked in field goal percentage. Greenberg shot 45.6 percent, good for 15th in the conference. Greenberg shot an even 50 percent during MASCAC play. Greenberg was also 4th in the conference with 25 blocks in 25 games and was the only Trailblazer to appear in all 25 games.
The freshman Harris (John D. O'Bryant School of Math & Science) was 14th in assists with 44, 16th in steals with an average of 1.2 steals per game, and was tied for 9th in the league in blocked shots per game. Harris was the top rookie in 9 of the 13 statistical categories the MASCAC keeps, led the Trailblazers in minutes per game with 30 and finished 2nd in Rookie of the Year voting.
Junior Mike Perreault (Northbridge High School) was the Trailblazers leading man from international waters. Perreault was 2nd in the league with 53 made 3-pointers and 5th in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 37.3%.
MCLA was the top team in the conference when it came to offensive rebounding and was 3rd on the defensive glass. The other category MCLA dominated in was getting to the line; despite conference foes Bridgewater and Salem playing 5 extra games, nobody in the league shot more than the 700 free throws the Trailblazers attempted in the 08-09 season. MCLA was one of the top teams in the country when it came to getting to the line, averaging 28 free throws a game.
