Student Athlete Spotlight: Trailblazer Ramon Viches

Hailing from Boston Massachusetts, Ramon Viches grew up watching and playing basketball. "I was always around it and playing in numerous leagues with my cousins and friends," said Viches.

Unlike most athletes who were influenced by their parents to continue to play basketball and to play at the next level, Viches wanted to be just like his favorite player, former NBA star Tracy McGrady. There was another reason why Viches is now playing here at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts also. He loved the game.  

Viches, in his third year with the Trailblazers, was named captain this year by head Coach Jamie Morrison. "It feels good being named a captain as a junior," said Viches. Viches played a key role on the court last year. He played in 24 of the Trailblazers 27 games, starting in 10 of them. Not only was the 6'5" sophomore a threat inside the paint, he was also a threat from beyond the arc.

Viches stated a lot of his success happens in MCLA's home gym. A major factor in that theory is the fan support.  He credits the fans who continue to show up game after game and support him and the basketball team. "They're always rooting for you," said Viches. "Through wins and losses the fans stay involved throughout the whole game and are always cheering when something good happens."

Before MCLA, Viches led his Malden High School team in scoring, rebounding and blocks his senior year and they also made the state tournament 3 out of the 4 years he was on varsity. Although Viches and the Trailblazers are off to a bit of a slow start, he continues to push himself everyday to become a better player.  Viches has played in all five games this season and will be counted on to be a leader and role model for the Trailblazers.

Fans can come out and support Ramon Viches and the Trailblazers when they return home on Saturday December 8^th against SUNY Canton. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
