BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -
The MCLA Men's Soccer Team dropped their first game of the season this afternoon to Bridgewater State College by a score of 2-1 in double overtime. Senior forward Luke Brewer (Edgartown, MA) tallied the game-winning goal with just 1:35 remaining in the second overtime period.
The game marked the MASCAC opener for both teams as BSC improved to 3-3 overall (1-0 MASCAC) while MCLA dropped to 3-1 (0-1 MASCAC) after suffering its' first setback of the season.
Freshman forward Jake McCall (Lincoln, RI) provided the game tying goal for the Trailblazers as he potted his fourth goal of the season in the 83rd minute of play.
The match seemed destine for a draw as the clock winded down in the second overtime period. BSC had other ideas, however, as sophomore midfielder Jose DePina (Boston, MA) and freshman forward Simao Mendes (Brockton, MA) combined to set up Brewer's game-winner. Off a punt, Mendes headed the ball to DePina who trapped the ball and fed a pass to a wide open Brewer. Brewer promptly rifled a shot under the crossbar and just over the outstretched hand of the MCLA keeper.
Senior goaltender Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, MA) turned aside nine shots to post his third win of the season and 15th of his career. Seifert's counterpart, fellow senior Evan Coe (Hopewell Junction, NY), made ten saves between the pipes for the Trailblazers.
Bridgewater State travels to Rhode Island College for a non-conference game with the Anchormen on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30. MCLA travels to Castleton State College on Tuesday for a seven o'clock match with the Spartans
