Hobbs Homers Twice But Trailblazers Lose Two
The Skidmore College softball team picked up a pair of wins in Wednesday’s doubleheader sweep of MCLA at Thoroughbred Field.
The Skidmore College softball team picked up a pair of wins in Wednesday's doubleheader sweep of MCLA at Thoroughbred Field. The Thoroughbreds took game one, 9-1 in six innings and game two, 20-6 in five innings.
Skidmore improves to 10-8 overall, while the Trailblazers fall to 2-14.
In the opener, Julia Schwartz did it all for the Thoroughbreds as she picked up her first win of the season, allowing one run on three hits over five innings and also going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI.
Skidmore opened the scoring in the second as Lauren Bernstein doubled home a run and later scored on a double steal attempt. They added two more in the third behind a two-RBI double from Schwartz to make it 4-0.
MCLA got on the board in the third behind a solo shot from Kendra Hobbs, but the Thoroughbreds would tack on three more in the fifth and two in the sixth to take game one, 9-1.
Sam Barbarotta had a hit and a walk in game one.
In the nightcap, six different players drove in multiple runs for Skidmore, highlighted by a three RBI performance from freshman Katie Amo and a two-run homerun from Bernstein.
The Thoroughbreds came out of the gates fast, pounding out 12 runs on 12 hits in the first two innings to take a 12-1 lead. The Trailblazers trimmed the lead to 12-5 after posting four runs in the third.
Kayla Koumjian and Angelica Perfido had back-to-back doubles in the inning.
Skidmore answered back in the fourth, plating eight runs to push its total to 20. Hobbs tallied the only other run on her second solo shot of the day in the fifth as the Thoroughbreds earned the sweep with the 20-6 win.
Senior Sam Crose earned the win, allowing just the Hobbs' homerun, while striking out five in two innings of relief.
Ainsley MacDonald suffered the loss in both games for MCLA. In game two Kendra Hinkell had a hit, a walk and an rbi. Taylor Warnock also had a hit and rbi.
The Trailblazers return to action on Saturday, when they host Mass Maritime at 1 p.m.
