Trailblazers Slide Continues at Salem State
The Trailblazers of Mass. College of Liberal Arts were swept by Salem State University in a doubleheader today.
The Trailblazers of Mass. College of Liberal Arts were swept by Salem State University in a doubleheader today. With the victories Salem improves their record to 27-9 and stand at 9-1 in the MASCAC. MCLA falls to 4-27 and are 2-8 in MASCAC play.
The Lady Vikings controlled the first game of the day and won easily 9-1 in five innings. Salem used a six hit six run second inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Back to back singles from juniors Christina Cipriani (Peabody, MA) and Lauren Garchinsky (Saugus, MA), followed by a walk to junior Sara Bergeron which loaded the bases for sophomore Jeanette Doucette who ripped a two RBI single into left field.
MCLA responded with one run in the top of the third as Kendra Hobbs (Haverhill, MA) led off with a double and scored on a double by senior Kayla Koumjian (Watervliet, NY). That is all junior pitcher Alyssa Brown (Stoneham, MA) would surrender on the day. She pitched a complete game five innings and recorded six strike outs.
Junior Ainsley MacDonald (White River Jct, VT) recorded the loss for the Trailblazers in four innings of work she allowed 10 hits while striking out four.
Koumjian and Erin Kelley both had two hits in game one for MCLA.
In the second game of the double header Salem completed the sweep by knocking off MCLA 8-0 in six innings. A double from Toussaint scored Grifoni and Vitale who had reached on a triple and walk respectively. Bergeron Aldred and Vitale all went 2 for 3 in the game.
Fanning took care of the rest allowing just one hit over six innings striking out eight batters. MacDonald received the loss for MCLA, she pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing 11 hits, but only three earned runs and striking out five.
Kelley had the only Trailblazer hit in game two.
Salem State will play a doubleheader on the road as they face Framingham State on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. MCLA is on the road again on Tuesday as they will travel to Westfield State for a 2:00 pm start time.
