MCLA falters on the road at Westfield State 66-54
The MCLA Women's basketball team couldn't keep up with MASCAC frontrunner Westfield State, falling to the Owls 66-54. Jen Wehner had a double double in the setback for the Trailblazers.
Westfield, MA- MCLA fell to MASCAC rival Westfield State University 66-54 on Thursday evening. With the loss, the Trailblazers are now 12-7 overall, posting a 4-3 league mark. The Owls continue to lead the conference, standing at 6-1 in the league, 14-5 overall.
The first half was a tight contest all the way through as neither team held a lead bigger than six points. Westfield led 22-16 before MCLA scored the final two buckets of the half to go into the locker room down 22-20.
The second half began much the same as the first as MCLA knotted the game on four different occasions before the Owls made their clinching run.
Westfield pulled ahead 34-33 before going on a 19-4 run to take a commanding 53-37 lead with 7:46 to go. The Trailblazers committed five critical turnovers in the run. MCLA would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Jen Wehner finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds in the loss, while teammate Alie Dobrovolc added 14 points. No other Trailblazer reached double figures. MCLA was plagued by 18 turnovers on the night.
Briana Kelly had a game high 23 points for the Owls. Ashley Finnegan added a double double of her own collecting 11 points and 12 rebounds. Cassy Jouannet added 10 points for the Owls.
MCLA will host the Owls in a rematch on Tuesday night.
