Granito nets six goals in MCLA's setback to Mitchell
Kim Granito continued her hot start as she scored six goals for the Trailblazers in a loss against Mitchell tonight
North Adams, MA- Mitchell College's Kate McCormack scored six goals as she led the Mariners to a hard fought 12-9 decision over the MCLA Trailblazers tonight at Shewcraft Field. The Mariners earned their first win of 2019 as they improve to 1-2 overall. MCLA drops to 0-3 as they prepare to head into conference play Friday night.
McCormack got Mitchell on the board early as she tallied just two minutes into the contest for an early 1-0 advantage. MCLA would battle back and eventually knot things up at 2-2 on Kim Granito's first goal of the night. Mitchell responded with three straight tallies though to take a 5-2 advantage as McCormack netted two of those markers.
The Trailblazers found themselves trailing 6-3 late in the first half, but would score the final two goals to pull within 6-5 at intermission. MCLA actually outshot Mitchell 21-13 in the half.
In the second half, the visitors stayed aggressive and built an 11-6 lead when Francesca Pinard scored with just under thirteen minutes remaining. MCLA would outscore Mitchell 3-1 over the final minutes of play as Granito added two more goals, but MCLA ran out of time and Mitchell secured the win.
Gillian MacLellan was solid between the pipes stopping 15 shots to earn the win for Mitchell. Pinard added a pair of goals to compliment McCormack. Hannah Corrigan notched 6 groundballs and 5 draws to aid the offense.
MCLA was paced by Granito's six goals. Brianna Morris, Ciera Dowling, and Sara Tomkiewicz each added goals for the hosts. Shannon Prouty absorbed the loss collecting six saves.
The Trailblazers head to Framingham State on Friday night to open up MASCAC play.
