MCLA handles Elms, Tietgens ties scoring mark
North Adams, MA- The MCLA women's soccer team received a pair of goals from freshman Lindsay Barbolla (Greenwich, NY) and a record tying goal by junior Jess Tietgens (Stamford, VT) in posting a 3-0 non conference win over Elms College this afternoon at Ron Shewcraft Field. The Trailblazers improved to 1-2 with the win, while Elms drops to 0-2.
MCLA opened the first half on the attack as Elms keeper Molly Corse was tested early. Barbolla's first collegiate goal came in the 17th minute of play as she dribbled through the Elms defense and fired a shot past Corse. Just four minutes later, she found the net again. Junior Lizzie Ryan (New Bedford, MA) fired a shot that ricocheted off of Corse with Barbolla picking up the carom and finding the back of the net.
Tietgens, who set the single season scoring mark a year ago, would net her first goal of the season seven minutes into the second half. Sophomore Lauren Ford (Voorheesville, NY) played a beautiful ball up ahead to a streaking Tietgens who avoided the defender and beat Corse to the left corner. The goal tied the career goals record at MCLA.
Sophomore Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, NY) had a workmanlike afternoon in net for MCLA, collecting 7 saves on the day. For the afternoon, the Trailblazers outshot Elms 32-10.
MCLA returns to action on Saturday when they host Bard College at 2pm. Next up for Elms is another road game at Clark.
