MCLA made it three straight victories today with a 3-0 shutout of the Spartans of Castleton State.
North Adams - MCLA made it three straight victories today with a 3-0 shutout of the Spartans of Castleton State. The 3-0 score is a bit misleading however as this was a tight game throughout; with both goalies making some outstanding saves.
The Trailblazers got up just three minutes into the game when Harmony McGorman (Orleans, MA) raced up the left side of the box off a perfect feed from Jess Tietgens (Stamford, VT). McGorman blasted a shot past Spartan goalie Ericka Davis (Cambridge, VT) making it 1-0. Both teams had good opportunities turned back with the Trailblazers having a slight edge in play going into the break.
Castleton came out strong in the second half with several chances by Courtney Chadburn (North Clarendon, VT) and Maria Arnot (Milford, NY). Arnot broke in several times in the second half, but was turned away by Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, NY) each time. The climax of the game with around 15:00 left in the contest; Tietgens was in alone and set to make it a two goal game when keeper Davis came way out beyond the box to break it up. The Spartans came right down the field and it was Arnot's chance in alone. Wehner got just enough of the Arnot shot to redirect it off the post and a sprawled out Wehner was able to cover up. The play seemed to energize the Trailblazers. Six minutes later freshman Lindsay Borbolla (Greenwich, NY) headed in a long free kick off the foot of Jade Prickett (Westhampton, MA). Prickett added another assist minutes later on a feed to Tietgens for the final goal of the day.
Wehner was terrific making 13 saves and several other big plays on balls in the box. Davis was also very good making 13 saves of her own. Sarah Ethier (Portsmouth, RI) also had four shots on goal for the Spartans. Castleton drops to 0-5-1on the season and MCLA climbs above .500 at 3-2.
Castleton will travel to Lyndon State on Saturday and the Trailblazers will open up conference play by hosting Bridgewater State on Saturday at 2:00pm.
