North Adams, MA – The MCLA Trailblazers seniors didn't exactly have ideal weather conditions on senior day as they took on Fitchburg State, it was rainy, windy and raw all afternoon. The game was played mostly in the midfield with neither team able to garner much of an attack.
In the end though, it was the senior who has rewritten the record books at MCLA who was able to make the difference for MCLA (9-2-2, 4-0-1). The Trailblazers won 1-0 on Jess Tietgens 12th goal of the season and the victory keeps them a top of the MASCAC standings with two games to play in the league.
The MCLA goal was a bit of a fluke as Lindsay Borbolla launched a shot from 45 yards out, the swirling wind at Ron Shewcraft continued to carry the ball towards the goal. Fitchburg goalie Melanie Berent was able to make the save at the crossbar, but was unable to keep her balance and the rebound fell to the foot of Tietgens. Tietgens buried the shot in the net, making the Trailblazers only real chance of the day count.
Jen Wehner only had to make one save on the day; although she did need a little help from defender Lauren Ford at the end of the 1st half. Wehner came way out to challenge a Falcons shot with 15 seconds remaining; the save ricocheted off Wehner to Falcon Rebecca Spiro, who blasted one on net. Ford was heads up and in perfect position to head away what would have been the equalizing goal.
The second half was very slow and methodical and the Trailblazers were outshot 4-1 in the second half. MCLA didn't record a shot until less than five minutes to play. Fitchburg also couldn't really generate a quality chance despite having the edge in play in the second half.
Tietgens, Samantha Miller, Danielle Parenteau, Elizabeth Ryan and Shannon Maloney were all recognized before the game for their contributions to the program. The five seniors are 45-20-6 in their careers and helped the school earn its first ECAC postseason bid as well.
MCLA will be back in action Tuesday at RPI at 7:00 PM. Fitchburg (8-5-1, 2-3) will host Castleton State Thursday at 7:00 PM.
