Volleyball Rally for 3-2 Win Over Elms
MCLA went the distance with Elms College in non-conference play this evening.
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The MCLA Volleyball team welcomed the Elms College Blazers into the Amsler Campus Center Gymnasium this evening for a non-conference clash. For the first time this season, the Trailblazers had to go to a fifth and deciding set, rallying back from a 2-1 deficit to pick up their 12th win of the season.
THE BASICS:

- Series History: MCLA now leads the all-time series 10-5. MCLA took the last meeting of the teams by a score of 3-2 on October 18, 2024, in Chicopee. The Trailblazers took the first-ever meeting of the teams by a score of 3-0 on October 9, 2004, in Chicopee.
HIGHLIGHTS
- MCLA rolled through the Blazers in the first set, holding double-digit leads at multiple points before closing it out at 24-14. Three kills a piece from Elizabeth Brown (Lee, MA) and Makenna Carter (Averill Park, NY) set the tone. Five different Trailblazers recorded service aces in the set, including two from Beth Harris (San Antonio, TX) and one each by Madison Maloof (Amsterdam, NY), MaKayla Schuerer (Lee, MA), Kaelynn Greeley (Corona, CA), and Shannon O'Brien (Unionville, CT).
- The second set opened much like the first, with MCLA jumping out to an early lead and stretching it to as many as six points at 13-7 when Payton Yung (Schoharie, NY) picked up a kill before the Blazers started a rally, closing out the set with an 18-8 run to take the set at 25-21. Elms' Alysha Izquierdo notched six kills in the set while Yung posted five for MCLA, and Brown added four.
- The third set showed that the Blazers had found their legs after the rough start, walking away with a 22-12 frame that put the hosts back on their heels. Quiana Gibbs had four kills for Elms while Liliana Simmons added three service aces.
- With their backs against the wall, MCLA began to rally back for the most exciting set of the evening. The fourth set alone saw 10 of the match's 22 tie scores and six of the match's 12 lead changes. Mikayla Howlett (Harwinton, CT) picked up the decisive kill to cap the fourth set at 27-25 for the home team. First years Kaelynn Greeley (Corona, CA) and Howlett recorded four and three kills, respectively, in the set.
- The fifth set added to the evening's drama with another eight ties and four lead changes, with the Trailblazers turning to the leadership of Brown, who had a set-high five kills in the final frame.

On Saturday, MCLA will be back in action when they travel to Fitchburg State for a tri-match with the Falcons and the Lesley University Lynx at the Fitchburg State Recreation Center. The first match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
