Men’s Hockey Rally Falls Short in Codfish Bowl Opener
MCLA dropped a non-conference matchup to UMass Boston this afternoon.
BOSTON, Mass. – The MCLA Men's Ice Hockey team returned from their winter break, traveling to the 60th Annual Codfish Bowl and a matchup with the host UMass Boston Beacons. Cade Herrera and Sam Zis scored while Rocco Stolz stopped 44 shots, but the Trailblazers couldn't overcome two goals by the Beacons' Chris Repmann.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The host Beacons score a pair of goals before the fans had an opportunity to warm their seats at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink. The first was credited to Tyler Drummond (0:52 of 1st period, assisted by Jack Mortson & Jude Kurtas) and the second went to Chris Repmann (2:20, Rhett Kodsi & Chris Merryman). The 2-0 score would then stand into the second period.
- MCLA would cut the home team's edge in half just over seven and a half minutes into the second period when junior forward Cade Herrera (Brentwood, CA / Seahawks H.C) (7:39 of 2nd period, Murphy) put home a pass from junior forward Quinn Murphy (Champaign, IL / Philadelphia H.C.). The goal was fourth of the season and second in as many games for Herrera while the assist fourth of the year for Murphy.
- The Beacons would stretch their lead back to a pair of goals just before the 11th minute ran off the clock when Jakob Teply (10:59, Jacob Roberson & Zander Lizotte) scored on the power play, accounting for the final goal of the period.
- The final period was scoreless heading into the closing minutes with the Trailblazers pulling their netminder for an extra skater, but UMass Boston was able to add to their lead with an empty net goal by Repmann (18:36 of 3rd period, unassisted).
- MCLA added a power play goal with 15 seconds to play to set the final score at 4-2. The last goal was scored by junior forward Gavin Glaubitz (Owings, MD / Connecticut Chiefs) (19:45, Green & Kenny) with assists credited to junior defenseman Shane Green (Bear, DE / Philadelphia Little Flyers) and freshman defenseman Kieran Kenny (Edmonton, AB / Philadelphia H.C.). The goal was the first of the season for Glaubitz while the assists were second and first for Green and Kenny, respectively.
- The Beacons' Alex Koenig stopped 22 of 24 shots to pick up the win and move his record to 4-1-0.
- The Trailblazers' freshman goalie Roco Stolz (Denver, CO / Charlotte Rush) recorded 44 saves but still fell to 3-5-1.
