MCLA's Wehner named D-III News Preseason All American
MCLA senior forward Jen Wehner was selected to the D-III News Preseason All American team. Wehner was one of three players selected from New England to represent the 24 player team.
NORTH ADAMS, MA- MCLA senior Jen Wehner has been named to the D-III News Preseason All America team. The latest honor for Wehner is the first of its kind in Women's Basketball program history. She is one of only three players from New England selected to the team joining Nicole Wurdeman (Babson) and Caroline Stedman (Amherst) as top 24 selections nationwide.
MCLA Head Coach Holly McGovern, who recruited Wehner was pleased to hear of the nomination: "To be named a Preseason All American alongside the company that she is in (Stedman and Wurdeman) is a bold statement for Jen and her all around game. For the past 3 years, she has created a presence for our team in the post and always attracts extra attention from opposing defenses. Jen has matured throughout her time on the basketball court, and can change the game for us the moment she steps on the floor. I am very excited for Jen and her well deserved nomination."
The reigning MASCAC Player of the year will be returning off of the most dominating seasons in school history. Wehner averaged a double-double, totaling over 17 points per game (17.7) and 14.3 boards. She also led the league in blocked shots. On five different occasions she was named the league's player of the week, while twice being named the ECAC Player of the Week.
During last season, Wehner became the fourth player (and first junior ever) to notch her 1,000th career point. She has a great chance to finish her career as the all time leading scorer and rebounder in program history.
Following her remarkable season, accolades began to fly in. She was named a first team NEWBA (New England Women's Basketball Association) player, while also being tabbed a second team All New England ECAC selection.
Wehner will finish out her career in a Trailblazer uniform as one of, if not the best, athlete in school history. She was instrumental in lifting the basketball program to their first ever conference tournament championship. That victory secured the program's first ever birth into the NCAA Tournament. Wehner was also a stalwart in goal for the 2010 regular season champion Women's Soccer program.
