MCLA Women picked to claim MASCAC crown
The MCLA Women's Basketball team, coming off a 17-10 season, are the preseason favorites in the MASCAC following a vote of the leagues coaches. The Trailblazers finished tied for second a year ago under 7th year Head Coach Holly McGovern.
2011-2012 MASCAC Preseason Poll
North Adams, MA- For the first time in program history, the MCLA Women's Basketball team was chosen to finish first in the MASCAC preseason poll. Following a vote conducted by the league's coaches, MCLA finished with 42 points to edge rival Westfield State's 40. The Trailblazers earned four first place votes, while Westfield, Bridgewater, and Worcester each claimed one.
Following Westfield is defending tournament champion Bridgewater State. Worcester State is fourth while Framingham is fifth. Fitchburg and Salem round out the poll, finishing with 13 points apiece.
The Trailblazers, under the direction of 7th year head coach Holly McGovern, return many key performers from last season. Leading the charge is preseason All American, senior forward Jen Wehner. The reigning MASCAC player of the year returns after leading the conference in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots last season.
Wehner is not alone however, as McGovern's troops also return fellow senior Alie Dobrovolc. Dobrovolc was a first team All MASCAC selection last season while providing a slashing threat to complement Wehner. Either Wehner or Dobrovolc led MCLA in scoring in every contest last season.
Also returning is junior Lucy Tremblay. The MASCAC Rookie of the Year following her freshman season, Tremblay was hampered by an ankle injury a year ago. She still finished third on the team in scoring, while leading the team in three pointers.
MCLA will open play on November 16th against St. Joe's (CT).
